What is the state of pelvic floor physiotherapy in North America?

In 2021, there were 27,004 PTs licensed and practicing in Canada, an increase of 3.8% compared with 2020 (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2021), and 544,079 licensed physical therapists practicing in the USA (IBIS World, 2023), a 6.2% increase compared with 2020.

Every year 3.3 million Canadians are affected by pelvic floor dysfunction (PT Health, 2022), and nearly 24% of US women are living with one or more pelvic floor disorders (NIH, 2008).

If you aren’t treating pelvic floor patients, you are possibly missing out on providing care and education for a lot of people who may need it.

It’s clear that our profession is growing and there is a massive need for PT, including pelvic floor physiotherapy!

Are you treating pelvic floor patients?

And without further ado, our main attraction: the
pelvic floor physiotherapy features on Embodia

Pelvic exercises

A large library of pelvic floor exercises is available on Embodiathis includes both pelvic floor exercises for men and pelvic floor exercises for women. More exercises, pelvic, orthopaedic, and other areas of practice, are added on a regular basis.

From the Embodia exercise library, you can search for exercises using the search options or click on an author’s name to find exercises from that specific author, for example, Pelvic Health Solutions.

Quickly add any exercises to an exercise program and prescribe it to your patients digitally; who then access it easily from their secure Embodia dashboard, on web and mobile apps.

Pelvic education for patients

Just like exercises, you also have access to sharable patient education, which can include videos or handouts, such as the Female Pelvic Floor handout from Pelvic Health Solutions.

Watch this video from the webinar in which Maggie Bergeron walks us through how to use the patient education library and upload your own education or exercises.

Creating pelvic exercises or patient education

If you love creating your own exercises or patient education you can easily do that by simply clicking ‘Upload Exercise’ or ‘Upload Education’.

If you’re connected to a clinic, you can develop a clinic library of content that you and your colleagues can use.

You also have the option to record your patients in session performing an exercise and share that exercise with them!

Pelvic health questionnaires

We offer a wide range of outcome measures and questionnaires, which you can share digitally with your patients. This includes pelvic-health-specific outcome measures and intake forms. We’ve highlighted a few of the templates available below. You can also easily create your own questionnaires!

After your patients digitally complete questionnaires shared with them, you will be able to view them. If a score is included, Embodia will tally the scores for you and track change over time.

Diaries: Bladder diary, Fibre diary, and any other diary you want!

Two of the most loved outcome measures by pelvic floor physiotherapists on Embodia are the digital bladder diaries and fibre diaries.

Not many people want to bring a piece of paper with them to the bathroom, but most people bring their phones!

Bladder and fibre diaries are available on every account on Embodia that has a Tier 2 or 3 Membership (learn more about memberships here). Simply click, add the start and end date, and share it with your patient. They can then add as many entries as they like, which will be available to you in real-time.

By special request from our community of practitioners, we’ve also created a new feature that allows you to share any kind of diary you like. For example, a sleep diary!

Pelvic health courses & resource packages

And last but definitely not least, the feature that we are perhaps best known for, Embodia Academy, an extensive library of on-demand courses, live webinars, and resource packages.

Included in our library are a ton of pelvic health-related courses.

Embodia Tier 1, 2 and 3 members enjoy a free Member course library with new courses added monthly.

You can search by area of interest (e.g. Pelvic Health), instructor, price range, title, or relevant keywords. Here’s an overview of the search features on Embodia Academy:
