Overview

This online physiotherapy course is an introduction to pelvic floor muscle training in men with a focus on Prostate Cancer (PCa).

1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with PCa globally. Physiotherapists have a significant role to play in the pre and rehabilitation of men requiring treatment. Despite more than 45 RCTs, there has been limited evidence to support PFM training in men due to mixed efficacy.

However, building on 15 years of clinical expertise and having recently completed her Ph.D., Dr. Jo Milios will share her recently published high-intensity protocols for continence and erectile function recovery following Radical Prostatectomy. These are a world first and based on functional training aligned to clinical presentations.

Historically, men have had very minimal support in preparation for PCa treatment - including surgery and radiation patients, however educating urologists is a responsibility physiotherapists can now adopt, utilizing this robust new scientific evidence.

This online course will tour the history of PCa management from both a clinical and research perspective and will cover both urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction, as most men undergoing treatment will experience both.

For those undergoing radiation therapy, evidence is sparse, however, further research is being developed, as many men will also experience bowel dysfunction and this is an additional quality of life impact.

Whole-body exercise prescription for men diagnosed with PCa will also be presented, based on the work of Jo’s not-for-profit charity ‘PROST! Exercise 4 Prostate Cancer Inc'. and the vast body of evidence already in existence to support this.

Physiotherapists can add so much value to this patient caseload and links to a new online program will be introduced, that can be immediately translated to practice.

Audience:

This online course is open to physiotherapists (physical therapists), nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors, medical doctors, and any other licensed health care provider.

The instructors
Pelvic Health Solutions

Pelvic Health Solutions (PHS) is an evidence-based teaching company that aims to educate and empower physiotherapists, healthcare professionals, and everyday people about pelvic health.

PHS was founded in 2010 out of the need to develop pelvic health resources in Ontario at a time when it was an under-serviced health concern. PHS provides continuing education courses, mentoring, and clinical resources for a variety of practitioners with the goal of equipping them to deliver evidence-based, biopsychosocial assessment and treatment of pelvic health problems in our province and abroad.

Our company also exists as a way to connect people experiencing pelvic health concerns to pelvic health physiotherapists in their area. PHS has ultimately blossomed into a community of curious people who are committed to providing hope and healing to those who suffer from pelvic health issues.

A second RCT utilizing therapeutic ultrasound to treat scar tissue in the 1 in 6 men who develop Peyronie’s disease following treatment for PCa was also completed.

Jo has presented her research findings at several international conferences including WCPT15, 17 & 19, APCC 2014-18, CSM 2020 and locally at Men’s Sheds , Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and ANZUS Conferences 2011-2018.
