Overview
From Bodily Knowledge to Intuitive Movement (FBKTIM) is a seven-part live series with physical and yoga therapist Sherry Brourman, built chapter by chapter from her book of the same name. Each session unpacks one chapter, bridging physical therapy, yoga therapy, and pain science into a framework you can bring straight into your own practice, with research assistant Gina moderating.
This session covers Chapter 1: The Psycho-Social Dynamics of Movement. New to the series? Start with the free introductory session to see how it all connects, or see the full series and register here.
It is highly recommended that you have a copy of the book to accompany this series. You can purchase a copy of the book from Amazon or Singing Dragon, and you can learn more about the book on Sherry's website.
About Chapter 1
Chapter 1 gives a glimpse into the many biological, emotional, social, and spiritual influences that shape how we move. This chapter explores how the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual layers are interconnected (see the Interconnected Bodies Chart, Appendix A).
As a starting place, we simply choose whichever doorway feels least threatening or most accessible for that individual, particularly when they are just beginning to trust the process of healing. We lose nothing by beginning anywhere because these layers are so deeply interwoven that entering through any one of them inevitably influences the others, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.
The relationship-building roots that develop between you and your client during this initial exploration often open the door to other layers of healing, where your thoughtful curiosity and questions can help clients recognize and gently explore the experiences, beliefs, or emotions that they feel ready to acknowledge.
Learning Objectives
- Articulate your personal methodology in language that empowers clients to develop confidence through their own lived experiences.
- Listen for each client's unique interpretation of the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual influences that have shaped their bodily awareness, personal story, and healing experience.
- Collaborate with each client to develop individualized, adaptable, and progressive movement plans that reflect their biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs.
- Recognize breathing patterns as reflections of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual influences.
- Individualize the balance of breathwork, yoga postures, meditation, and lifestyle practices to support each client's needs during sessions and at home.
- Recognize and apply the principles of interoception, exteroception, and proprioception in your own movement while helping clients understand and utilize these awareness systems.
- Guide clients in recognizing and responding to their interoceptive signals of challenge or discomfort during yoga practice and in everyday life.
- Collaborate with clients to understand their goals, language, stories, and healing perspectives, using these insights to individualize each session.
