Overview

From Bodily Knowledge to Intuitive Movement (FBKTIM) is a seven-part live series with physical and yoga therapist Sherry Brourman, built chapter by chapter from her book of the same name. Each session unpacks one chapter, bridging physical therapy, yoga therapy, and pain science into a framework you can bring straight into your own practice, with research assistant Gina moderating.

This session covers Chapter 3: The Foundation of Movement within Yoga Posture Practice. New to the series? Start with the free introductory session to see how it all connects, or see the full series and register here.

It is highly recommended that you have a copy of the book to accompany this series. You can purchase a copy of the book from Amazon or Singing Dragon, and you can learn more about the book on Sherry's website.

About Chapter 3: The Foundation of Movement within Yoga Posture Practice

Chapter 3 introduces the engineering of movement, demonstrating the value of learning about our personal movement system in order to apply the whole-person principles of Chapters 1 and 2. As bodily awareness becomes more grounded, we develop conscious interest in sturdiness and in softness, fulfilling breathing patterns, and increasing trust in what we notice and feel because our observations have become grounded in real-time recognition.

Just as importantly, on the days that a signal from any of our biological, psychological, social, or spiritual layers needs care, we gracefully learn to recognize whether that moment calls for less, more, or a full-on rest. Also, as bodily awareness becomes more familiar, we more naturally notice even subtle sensation so that we can respond before what might otherwise be old automatic reaction.

Ultimately, it is this inner confidence that grows within process allowing us to apply these lessons through observation, suggestion, and collaboration — first with ourselves and then with our clients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Experience and understand your personal movement system in relation to gravity, using that understanding as an anchor from which to articulate your teachings.

  2. Understand, utilize, and articulate Energetic Symmetry (ES) as a means of using Ground Reaction Force (GRF) efficiently while recognizing that asymmetry does not preclude balanced movement.

  3. Differentiate Primary Movement Patterns (PMPs), Movement Patterns (MPs), and Movement Habits (MHs) based on the entirety of a personal movement system.

  4. Understand how joints link together to form kinetic chains—the foundation of Primary Movement Patterns, Movement Patterns, and Movement Habits.

  5. Recognize individual kinetic chains as continually changing relationships among body segments that are influenced by the entire movement system.

  6. Recognize the contributions of three major mechanical influencers to movement patterns and movement habits:
    • Agile spinal rotation
    • Precision of the feet
    • Ease and depth of the breath

  7. Recognize common movement habits and understand how they influence entire movement systems, including "leaning back," the most common movement habit of all.

  8. Differentiate between balance and Energetic Symmetry (ES) through personal experience and observation.

Audience

Physical therapists, yoga therapists, occupational therapists, movement educators, and curious readers who are happy to utilize the appendices for technical support.
