Overview

Incorporating strategies and techniques that address the effect of emotional state and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity into health care practitioner's practices is essential if we are to provide holistic treatment to our clients. The presence of anxiety, stress, over-reliance on passive treatments, and fear avoidance behaviours have been shown to impact patient prognosis and outcome, and yet psychosocial factors are often only identified during assessment and not integrated as part of treatment.

This course delves into the influence of stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation on postural control, sensorimotor processing, movement, muscle activation, and pain and will discuss the neurophysiological mechanisms involved.

We will also learn treatment strategies and techniques, as well as home exercises, that can be utilized to address the influence of emotional state on the physical body and pain perception.

Learning Objectives

In this online course, you will learn to:

  1. Improve your understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms behind the effect of emotional state and autonomic nervous system activity on pain, motor control, and balance.

  2. Reframe the presence of psychosocial factors and behaviours - replacing potential stigmatism with compassion towards clients and providing a way to address the influence of these factors on your clients' pain and sensorimotor control.

  3. Empower yourself as a health care practitioner or bodyworker to provide evidence-based techniques and patient-appropriate education to facilitate patient autonomy in addressing the effect of emotional state on their physical functioning and pain.

Audience

This content is primarily intended for practitioners but is relevant to both managers and educators as well. This course would be of the most interest to health care professionals studying or specializing in neuroscience, orthopaedic, musculoskeletal, and sports injury streams.

Karlee Hall
PT, MScPT, PhD Candidate, MScKin, BScKin
Karlee Hall is a neuroscience researcher and registered physical therapist in Waterloo, Canada. Karlee graduated from the University of Toronto as a registered physical therapist in 2013 and worked in a sports medicine clinic for 5 years prior to starting her own practice in 2018, where she focuses on a neurofunctional approach to treatment. Karlee completed a MSc degree at the University of Waterloo in 2011 with her thesis work examining efficiency of skeletal muscle metabolism. Karlee has continued her education as a PhD Candidate at the University of Waterloo where she is investigating the modulatory effect of emotional state on the relationship between autonomic and somatic nervous systems during balance reactions and postural control. Her most recent work can be found in Frontiers Neurology, with her review paper titled “Emotional state as a modulator of autonomic and somatic nervous system activity in postural control: a review”. In the past few years she has been focused on translating knowledge about this topic and about the mind body connection to health care practitioners and students in health care training programs, as well as to the public, through education sessions, webinars, articles and other platforms.

Yes, you will learn 3 different home exercises. Beyond the module on this topic, there is also a handout provided with descriptions for the 3 different exercises that you can provide to your clients as patient education.

Yes, we will provide you with strategies and techniques that you can utilize to help your client's nervous system regulation and homeostasis so that they can be in a more balanced state. This will help to optimize performance, as well as treatment outcomes, for whatever techniques you plan for them that given day.
