Overview

Regardless of your profession or practice setting, every patient you see will have something in common: they require nutrition. Nutrition can impact health, wellness, and rehabilitation outcomes.

Over the past century, modern medicine has been able to extend the average lifespan of individuals, but currently, many people spend their later years with impaired levels of functioning.  As rehabilitation professionals, you will likely have a role in creating opportunities and strategies for increasing activity levels and improving function, however, lifestyle factors are also a key component of managing chronic diseases. One of the major components of lifestyle is diet and nutrition, which has a large role in determining disease-free years.

This 90-minute online course with Sean Wells will teach you the basics about nutrition, how nutrition can be assessed and prescribed for specific health issues, and explore emerging and specialty population topics relevant to the rehabilitation professional.

Whether you're working from a gym, in a hospital, or from a clinic, nutrition can directly impact the recovery of your clients or athletes.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate current statistics regarding chronic diseases
  2. Describe how diet can function in preventing many chronic diseases
  3. Explain how and why guidelines may fall short in helping prevent chronic diseases
  4. Outline several nutritional means for treating or preventing disease within these systems or areas of practice: cardiovascular, oncology, orthopedics, metabolic, neurologic, sports, pediatric, and geriatric.
  5. Describe the putative health-improving mechanisms behind a predominately whole-food, plant-based diet
  6. Explain the risks of standard American or Western diet
  7. Provide simple steps to help a client make changes in their diet to improve their health, rehabilitation outcome, or condition
