Module 1 - Integrative Lifestyle Medicine: Impacting Chronic Disease & Pain

  1. Learn how to screen for the vital signs of Lifestyle Medicine. 
  2. List the diagnostic labs necessary for systems-based screening in Functional Medicine. Describe how to operationalize the biopsychosocial assessment and intervention in a concrete, evidence-based model. 
  3. Identify the precepts for safe mind-body practice through the lens of medical therapeutic yoga. 
  4. Learn how to use psychologically informed methods of care. 
  5. Discuss the models for influencing behavior change. 
  6. Learn the evidence-base that supports Chronic Care Models.
  7. Use yoga as an Integrative Lifestyle Medicine intervention. 

Module 2 - Creating “3D” Health from the Oral Cavity to the Pelvic Floor through Trauma-Informed Psychology

  1. Discuss the neuroscience of the stress response. 
  2. Practice the Integrative Lifestyle Medicine interventions which influence stress response and emotional regulation. 
  3. List the 15 biomarkers of trauma-informed practice. 
  4. Describe the impact of epigenetics on clinical practice. 
  5. Assess scaffolding and sequencing of yoga due impact clinical outcomes. 
  6. Learn documentation methods
  7. Identify the major approaches to psychologically-informed therapy care. 
  8. Evaluate methods which can impact connectedness, eudemonia, and positive psychology. 
  9. Identify the major components of the Orofacial Examination. 

Module 3 - The Gut-Brain-Body Axis: Achieving Better Neuromuscular Outcomes through Nutrition

  1. List the impacts of the gut-brain-body axis on musculoskeletal and neuromuscular outcomes.
  2. Describe the scope of practice in nutritional counseling and intervention for physical therapy. 
  3. Discuss limitations in current dietary guidelines. 
  4. List common overconsumed and underconsumed macro- and micronutrients. 
  5. Evaluate basic methods for nutritional assessment, intervention, and counseling. 
  6. Consider the impact of social contagion on lifestyle choices and patient adherence.
  7. Discuss the epigenetics of nutrition. 
  8. Describe the neuroscience of manual therapy in impacting HPA Axis regulation. 
  9. Know when to refer. 

Module 4 - Sound & Sleep in Rehabilitation & Health Promotion: Fostering Whole Health

  1. Correlate emotional distress and its relationship with physical and occupational therapy outcomes. 
  2. Identify screening tools for evaluating emotional status
  3. Know when to refer
  4. List ways to foster healthy self-regulation.
  5. Describe the role of music and sound in practice.
  6. Compare and contrast stress and meditation types.
  7. Identify parameters that dictate vocal impact and longevity. 
  8. Practice vocal preservation intervention. 
  9. Cite evidence that supports the role of sleep, screening for sleep dysfunction, and intervention. 

Physical Activity Prescription

  1. List the evidence-based guidelines for physical activity across the lifespan.
  2. Cite the evidence that links emotional status to physical activity. 
  3. Cite the evidence that links obesity to physical activity levels. 
  4. List standardized physical activity assessments. 
  5. Create exercise prescription in a case study format with all required components. 
  6. Discuss ways to foster sustainable physical activity in patient care. 
  7. Cite the evidence base which supports physical activity prescription for the following conditions: geriatrics, prenatal, postpartum, stroke, heart attack, obesity, cancer, and general debility. 

Environmental Influences on Rehabilitation Outcomes: Tobacco Cessation & Other Toxic Exposures

  1. Describe the adverse impact of tobacco use and other substance abuse (including steroid injections). 
  2. Describe the adverse impact of environmental pollutant exposure. 
  3. List the major endocrine disruptors supported in the evidence base to cause adverse health effects. 
  4. Summarize the EB approach for tobacco and other substance abuse cessation. 
  5. Describe basic approaches to behavioral and pharmacological therapies in tobacco and substance abuse cessation. 
  6. Review the major diagnostic criteria for differential diagnosis of substance abuse disorders. 
  7. List the parameters for when to refer to specialists.

The instructors
Dr. Ginger Garner

Dr. Ginger Garner PT, DPT, ATC/L is an active clinician, author, teacher, and longtime advocate for improving access to physical therapy services. She is the CEO of Living Well Institute which she founded in 2000 to teach therapists how to integrate Yoga and Lifestyle Medicine practices into clinical and health promotion practice. Board certified in Lifestyle Medicine (DipACLM) and a certified Professional Yoga Therapist (PYT), Ginger has spent 26 years designing best-evidence yoga-based physical therapy programs. Her private practice, EudeMOMia®, located in Greensboro NC, offers a unique model of virtual services and in-person care. Ginger is the author of Medical Therapeutic Yoga, slated for 4 foreign translations and currently published in English and Italian. As an international speaker and educator, she has presented at over 20 conferences worldwide and has taught in 6 continents across a range of topics impacting the pelvic girdle. Ginger is an active member of APTA, serving as the Legislative Chair for APTA NC Chapter.
